Saining stick

A cleansing combination of seasonal meadow, hedgerow, woodland and home-grown herbs made by Wild Folk Apothecary.

Each stick is unique, handmade, created in ceremony, and gathered in reverence and connection with the wild in the UK. Depending on seasonal availability may contain mugwort, knapweed, lavender, yarrow, lemon balm, mallow and budleia. Bound with organic jute twine, a natural string made from plant fibres.

Saining, or the intentional act of purification and awakening, is an important and ancient folk practice helping us to remove negative influences. Rooted in Scottish folklore, saining traditionally used blessed water, smoke, and ritual gestures to protect individuals, animals, and homes.

When saining: 
use a fire-proof bowl
open windows
light the end of the bundle, holding the bound base
allow the flames to ignite the herbs until they are smouldering
place the smoking bundle into the bowl to prevent falling ash 
blow on your bundle to create more smoke if the smoulder is waning
move around your space allowing the smoke to cleanse all corners and nooks, all open spaces and objects
