marrak - excursions
London-raised, Sydney-based marrak is a producer, collage artist and photographer. Across mediums his work leans into texture, balancing control and chaos. From sampling jazz records to capturing field recordings, these raw elements are pulled apart, resampled, and run through generative patches until they transform. He works from a place of exploring, not arriving - crafting sounds experimentally, comfortable not knowing what happens next. The results are in constant motion: weightless, then rhythmic, then somewhere else entirely.
"Built over several years, this album grew through a process of collecting and rearranging. Field recordings anchor many of the tracks at a specific time or place, while sampling, whether from vinyl records, synthesisers, or earlier recordings, provides the raw material for transformation. Resampling became a way forward, allowing sounds to evolve beyond their original form. Made with a shifting collection of hardware and software, the album is in a sense part archival, part dream: interconnected pieces assembled from fragments, memories, and discoveries, familiar materials reassembled into something new." - marrak
marrak's debut album excursions is a culmination of ten years of this instinct, finally settled. It features field recordings from south London, Bristol, and Sydney. Opening track excursion05 sets the tone: ethereal, half-submerged samples that ease you in rather than announce themselves. detached is hypnotic, pulling you in before taking a completely new direction.
Slow Listen presents excursions on cassette with full play sides, mixed as a single 30-minute playback so each side runs straight through. Available on jade green cassette with an o-card outer sleeve. Tapping each tape with a smartphone unlocks a digital space where marrak's photography, artwork and album meet: photographs break down into fields of light-responsive particles, driven in real time by the music. Frequency and transient data shape brightness, motion, and the timing of each transition. The result is a visual that keeps evolving and looks different each time.
